For many of us Birthdays will the first time we became aware, at a very young age, of a cake at the centre of a celebration, with it's blazing candles, everyone singing "Happy Birthday to You" (not necessarily in tune - but did we notice?), the making of a wish, our great huffing and puffing as we tried to blow out all those candles followed by cheers and clapping whether we succeeded or not.
